New Delhi: Till this weekend, over 3,000 Myanmarese refugees have entered the border state of Mizoram owing to fierce fights between two ethnic groups in its Chin State.As per local news reports, the fresh bout of refugees have entered the Indian state’s Champhai district in the last four days. The Indian district borders the Chin State. Quoting a local official, a Mizoram Post report said the refugees have been accommodated at the district’s Zokhawthar village.“The official said the Myanmarese nationals mainly from three border villages – Khawmawi, Rikhawdar and Lianhna – fled to Zokhawthar due to fierce gun battle between Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and Rhineland Defence Force (CDF) of the Hualngo area, two of the many anti-Junta forces operating in the Chin hills,” the news report said.“The refugees started entering Mizoram on Thursday (July 3) and came in huge numbers following heavy gunfight between the two armed groups on Saturday (July 5). The situation along the International border now is calm as fighting stopped yesterday (July 6),” the report added. Even after the fighting stopped, at least 30 persons crossed the international border seeking safety.The international border has been “sealed” by the Assam Rifles “to prevent any untoward incident”. However, the unarmed common citizen of the border villages which wanted to enter Mizoram to save their lives have been allowed to cross the border.Mizoram has already more than 32,000 refugees who have fled that country due to the oncoming civil war situation. Earlier this week, the state government, on the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, have unrolled the process of collecting the biometric details of the refugees excluding children below five years.The two warring Chin ethnic armed groups are understood to have engaged in the gun battle to control areas, particularly Khawmawi, one of the commercial hubs of the Chin State and a “key transit point between India and Myanmar,” the report said quoting a local community leader. “At least four cadres were also reportedly injured and were brought to Mizoram for treatment,” the report added.Mizoram’s largest civil society group, Committee of Young Mizo Association (CYMA) is learnt to have intervened to ensure a ceasefire between the two groups.
