New Delhi: An FIR (first information report) has been registered against more than 10 policemen in Haryana’s Faridabad after a 24-year-old had died allegedly due to torture inflicted upon him during police custody. The victim’s mother had lodged a complaint at the Bicchor police station in the Nuh district, and accordingly, the FIR was registered. “An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 302 (murder), 342 (wrongful confinement), and 34 (common intention) against seven police personnel by name and 4-5 unnamed others,” the Indian Express quoted Narendra Bijarniya, Nuh SP, as saying. The FIR named sub-inspectors Rajesh, Surjeet; head constables Naresh, Dalbir; assistant sub-inspectors Narendra, Javed; and station house officer Basant from the cyber police station in Faridabad. While the relatives of Junaid, the victim, alleged that he was wrongly detained by police on May 31 and was tortured in the custody leading to his death, the police denied allegations of torture and linked his death to a kidney ailment. The Faridabad Police claimed that Junaid and five others were picked up on May 31 in connection with a case registered in September last year involving a financial fraud of Rs 80,000.According to Sube Singh, public relations officer of Faridabad Police, Junaid, his two brothers and another person were arrested based on the information provided by one Shahid and “technical evidence”, but were released on the same night.Denying the allegations of torture, Singh said, “Cyber Police did not torture any person or keep anyone in illegal custody. The allegation that Junaid was kept in custody illegally and tortured, leading to his death, is completely false and baseless.”However, the complaint lodged by Junaid’s mother presents a different picture. According to her, Junaid was returning home from a wedding in Rajasthan on May 31 around 6 pm when he was intercepted by “11-12 policemen” from Faridabad Cyber Police Station in three cars. She alleged that Junaid and others were released the next day after every family had paid Rs 70,000 to the police personnel. Junaid was released after he and his brother, who went to the police station to get him released, were made to sign several blank papers. There were injury marks on Junaid’s body, the complainant alleged.Junaid’s mother further said that his son was threatened by a station house officer (SHO) that he would “put all his family members in the same condition” if he got his medical tests done. When Junaid returned home, he told his mother that he was beaten all over his body and on his legs. As his condition worsened after coming home, his family consulted a local doctor. On June 11 when his health further deteriorated his family got his medical tests done at a community health centre (CHC) in Punhana. Following which they tried to shift him to a better and bigger hospital in Hodal, but he died on the way, as his health worsened. While the victim’s mother claimed that he had died because of the injuries on his body, the Nuh Police said that they had not found any injuries during post mortem.Following Junaid’s death, residents of the area had staged a protest Saturday, June 13, which culminated in violence for which eight people have since been arrested.
