New Delhi: Under the petroleum procurement diversification policy, India’s oil and gas public sector enterprises (PSEs) import crude oil from 41 countries. Some of the new suppliers include USA, Nigeria, Angola, Canada, Columbia, Brazil and Mexico and traditional suppliers include Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Petroleum and Natural Gas ministry said while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha. The ministry, however, didn’t share names of all the countries from which petroleum is sourced by India. In an unstarred question, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) MP John Brittas asked the ministry of petroleum: “a) whether it is a fact that government’s petroleum procurement diversification policy has helped in ensuring energy security for the country; b) if so, the salient features of the said policy; c) the number of countries from which petroleum imports are currently being made; and d) the details thereof?”Replying to the question, Minister of State Suresh Gopi mentioned, “Oil and Gas Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs) are Board run entities which source crude oil from diverse sources depending on their technical and commercial considerations. Currently, these PSEs import crude oil from 41 countries including new suppliers like USA, Nigeria, Angola, Canada, Columbia, Brazil and Mexico in addition to traditional suppliers in the Middle East such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar.”Posting an image of the question and answer on X, Brittas pointed out that the government hasn’t shared details like country-wise quantities, prices, and didn’t even list the name all the countries, including Russia.“Government’s reply: Oil PSUs are “Board-run entities” sourcing from “diverse sources.” Says imports come from 41 countries – but doesn’t even list them.No country-wise quantities. No prices. No import values. Not even Russia mentioned!! “Details thereof” apparently means no details at all,” Brittas wrote.Asked in Rajya Sabha:From how many countries does India import petroleum, and the details thereof?Government’s reply:Oil PSUs are “Board-run entities” sourcing from “diverse sources.”Says imports come from 41 countries – but doesn’t even list them.No country-wise… pic.twitter.com/crLDPUgPzD— John Brittas (@JohnBrittas) March 9, 2026
