New Delhi: Meta has apologised to the Union government for blocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late night video message to students on Facebook, attributing the removal to a technical error. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has summoned Meta’s global head of public policy Joel Kaplan over the issue, according to sources. In an odd reversal of trends, Modi’s message to students – promising fast track courts and other steps taken by the government to prevent paper leaks – was briefly blocked on the social media site along with a message saying “The attached media isn’t available in your region due to a legal request.”“The content was removed in error and has since been restored,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday (July 28).According to news agency IANS, Meta and Instagram’s global heads were summoned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology over the blocking of the prime minister’s video.“Meta’s PM post removal explanation not reasonable, deeper discussions needed, issue far from settled,” anonymous government sources quotes by news agency PTI said. The development comes amid reports that the Delhi Police has asked social media platforms to remove posts and videos targeting the prime minister.BackgroundIn the video message, posted on July 23, the prime minister had said that “paper leaks are no trivial matter” and that his government had taken several steps to stop paper leaks in the last two months.“I know that paper leaks are no trivial matter. It is extremely painful for millions of students and their parents. And therefore, in the past two and a half months since the paper leak incident, numerous steps have been taken. The culprits have been caught, and they are now behind bars,” Modi had said in the video.A day after this message, the prime minister had posted another video thanking Gen Z for their ‘response’ to his message. The prime minister’s second video came even as large swathes of those protesting against Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan had rejected Modi’s message as mere eyewash.“Thank you friends! I got an opportunity to meet you late at night yesterday. The manner in which you responded to the video I posted last night and provided positive suggestions—thanks to everybody. Your love will remain. Our relationship will continue to grow actively. Thank you, thank you friends,” Modi had said in his second video.
