New Delhi: Elections to 10 Rajya Sabha seats – including those held by external affairs minister S. Jaishankar and Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien – will be held on July 24, the Election Commission (EC) said on Tuesday.Six seats from West Bengal, three from Gujarat, and one from Goa will go to polls due to the expiry of the term of those currently representing them. Jaishankar, Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya, and Lokhandwala Jugalsinh Mathurji are the three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs from Gujarat whose terms are ending on August 18.The election to West Bengal seats is necessitated by the expiry of the term of Trinamool Congress MPs Derek O’Brien, Dola Sen, Sushmita Dev, Shanta Chhetri and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, and Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya. Their term ends on August 18 too. In Goa, the election will be held for the seat vacated by BJP MP Vinay D. Tendulkar; his term will end on July 28.The poll body said the notification for the election will be issued on July 6, and the last date for filing nominations will be July 13. Candidates can withdraw their nomination by July 17. The polling and counting will be held on July 24.The Election Commission on Tuesday also announced the same schedule for bye-election to one seat from West Bengal, which fell vacant following the resignation of Trinamool Congress MP Luizinho Joaquim Faleiro on April 11. His term was valid till April 2, 2026.
