New Delhi: Following two incidents of firing at anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protestors in his jurisdiction while the Model Code of Conduct is in place in Delhi, the Election Commission on Sunday relieved Deputy Commissioner of Police of South East Delhi, Chinmoy Biswal, from his position.In its order, EC said Biswal, a 2008-cadre IPS officer(2008), “stands relieved from his present post with immediate effect and shall report to MHA.”In view of the ongoing situation, the Commission also named his replacement. It directed that Kumar Gyanesh, a DANIPS-cadre officer, who is also the senior most Additional DCP (South-East) would take charge of DCP (South-East) with immediate effect.The poll panel, however, stated that the Ministry of Home Affaires and commissioner of the Delhi Police “may” immediately send a panel of three names to it for posting a “suitable officer” as regular DCP (South-East).The Commission has also asked the chief secretary of Delhi to send it a compliance report about the taking over of charge by the new DCP.The development comes in the backdrop of the handling of the anti-CAA protests at Jamia Milia Islamia University and Shaheen Bagh in the region and recent episodes of firing.
