New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will be meeting to select its new interim president on August 10, Saturday.Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday said that even a “slightest” delay in appointing a new president was “not an option”.Singhvi had set the ball rolling with a tweet this morning. On Sat, a consensus builder party pres #INC must be selected. slightest delay is not an option. In lighter vein, I gave analogy of wise men of #Vatican locked in a room indefinitely until they got a nomination! Subsequently, it has to be followed by full intra party elections.— Abhishek Singhvi (@DrAMSinghvi) August 9, 2019The grand old party has been without a chief since Rahul Gandhi resigned after its humiliating defeat in the general elections. Although he has continued as the acting president, he has been visibly inactive in the role. Based on Singhvi’s tweet, it appears that a full-time party president will be elected later. The CWC will constitute a committee to appoint a new provisional president for now. Although Singhvi has indicated that elections can happen to choose a new president, it is not clear as yet whether the CWC committee that will be formed on Saturday will agree to the proposal or not.The CWC meeting on Saturday is likely to start at 11 am at the All India Congress Committee’s office in New Delhi.Meanwhile, senior leaders have been sending out feelers, letting the public and party know of their preferred leaders for the presidential position. While Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh reportedly said that he would like a young leader at the helm of party affairs, a few other leaders have vouched for Priyanka Gandhi, saying that she is best equipped to fill her brother’s shoes.Speculation also grows on whether Sashi Tharoor, who has been voicing concerns on the lack of leadership in the party, could be a good fit for the post, ANI has reported.Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora has suggested the names of Jyotiraditya Scindia or Sachin Pilot for the chief’s post while ruling himself out of the race quite unequivocally. Both Deora and Scindia recently went against the party line on the abrogation of parts of Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. While senior Congress leaders vehemently attacked the government for “unilaterally” rendering Article 370 ineffective, the young duo supported the government’s move. Also read: After Confusion on Congress Position, CWC Condemns Centre’s Decisions on J&KDeora told ANI that the choice of Scindia or Pilot for the party president’s post would strengthen the governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. However, NDTV had reported that the 59-year-old Mukul Wasnik has emerged as a frontrunner for the post of president. Wasnik is considered close to Rahul Gandhi and had emerged an important go-to person for Congress members in the general elections, so much so that several leaders like Ashok Chavan had expressed resentment against Wasnik getting a bigger say than many old timers in party decisions.Wasnik had served as a minister in the United Progressive Alliance governments and is considered to be a leader with good organisational skills. Wasnik would be the first choice of many of the CWC’s senior leaders, as he is considered close to them.Lack of a full-time president has caused much trouble for the Congress as the party largely failed in mounting a solid opposition against many of the government’s contentious Bills in the Parliament.
