Srinagar: The X account of Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti was “withheld in India” on Monday (May 11), days after Jammu and Kashmir police filed a case of sedition against her, reportedly for posting a video of the Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Geelani. The home page of Mufti’s X account @IltijaMufti_ says it has “withheld in IN (India) in response to a legal demand”. Such demands are usually raised under section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 against the content which is deemed by the government as a threat to national security and public order, among other reasons.Mufti, daughter of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and a vocal critic of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP)-led Union government and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah, termed the gag an “attempt to silence my voice”.“It is no coincidence that the FIR came hours after I spoke about NC undermining and eliminating Urdu. The X withdrawal too was done after I criticised the CM for his reckless remarks condoning drug and alcohol abuse in J&K. There’s a covert understanding between BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] and NC where if you speak against NC the former targets you through the use of agencies,” she told The Wire. The gag on Mufti’s X account comes less than a fortnight after Jammu and Kashmir police filed a case (FIR No. 11/2026) against her for allegedly “promoting separatist ideology and propagating false information, with an intent to incite unlawful activities prejudicial to the peace, sovereignty, and integrity of India”.Mufti had posted a video of Geelani on X in which he was seen stressing on the importance of Urdu for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The case against Mufti was filed at the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar on April 28 under sections 152 (sedition), 196 (promoting enmity, hatred or disharmony between different groups) and 353 (public mischief) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.“Acting upon credible inputs regarding the circulation and dissemination of content (videos) across digital and social media platforms promoting separatist ideology and propagating false information, with an intent to incite unlawful activities prejudicial to the peace, sovereignty, and integrity of India, the Srinagar police have registered a case against certain individuals in this matter,” a police spokesperson said. The identities of other individuals were not revealed by police. According to reports, those X users who amplified the video are being investigated in the case.In her X post, Mufti wrote: “May not concur with Geelani Sahab’s ideology but this old video of him stressing on the importance of Urdu very well makes sense in addition to other reasons. Worth a watch.”Urdu is one of the official languages in Jammu and Kashmir.Mufti’s remarks on X, formerly Twitter, came against the backdrop of reports that J&K government led by Abdullah was planning to entirely do away with the requirement of Urdu knowledge for candidates who wish to apply for naib-tehsildar posts in J&K’s revenue department. The Abdullah government has, however, denied the reports.
