New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, with immediate effect, said reports on Friday (October 9). Akoijam is also a Congress Member of Parliament representing Inner Manipur in parliament.The dismissal was based on the findings of the university’s Internal Committee (IC), which recommended “major punishment” against him, NDTV reports. The probe was launched roughly a month ago, after complaints against the professor were first made.JNU vice chancellor Santishree D. Pandit signed off on the order, said the publication, citing an excerpt from it: “An inquiry was conducted by the Internal Committee (IC) against Prof Angomcha Bimol Akoijam…pursuant to allegations of sexual harassment. Based on the findings, the IC recommended major punishment…the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam,” it says.Eleven students had reportedly filed complaints with the university’s internal panel alleging sexual harassment against Akoijam.They alleged he made inappropriate remarks in class, made unwanted advances at gatherings and engaged in misconduct during interactions, including asking them to visit his official residence.Akoijam has consistently denied the allegations, calling them false and motivated. He is a first-time MP, elected in 2024.
