New Delhi: Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, who was arrested in the 2021 Republic Day Red Fort violence case, has died in a car accident on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in Haryana on Tuesday.According to the Indian Express, the police said his Scorpio had rammed a parked truck. Sidhu was at the wheel and was declared brought dead at a Kharkhoda hospital in Sonepat. The co-passenger survived, the newspaper said.Sidhu was accused by the Delhi police of instigating farmers who were protesting against the farm laws to participate in violence during the tractor rally on January 26, 2021. A portion of the protesters entered the Red Fort, inflicted damage on it and placed a Sikh religious flag on the ramparts. After Sidhu’s arrest in February that year, the police claimed that Sidhu was “the main rioter and instigator” who “provoked people” and incited violence. He was, however, granted bail by a court on April 16. Hours later, the police then arrested him again – this time for damaging the monument, prompting the court to slam the police and questioning the timing of the arrest. On April 26, the judge said the second arrest was an example of “vicious and sinister” action and that it “amounts to playing fraud with the established criminal process”.The second arrest, the court said, was an attempt to defeat the bail order in the first case.
