The mob attacked the temple, desecrated the holy idols and set fire to the premises. In addition to attacking the temple, the mob has also attacked surrounding houses belonging to the Hindu community,” said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. He stated that the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan high commission in New Delhi was summoned and a “firm protest” lodged”.Also read: It’s Foolish To Throw Stones at Pakistan When Modi’s India Is Now a Communal Glass HouseBagchi stated that India expressed “grave concerns at this reprehensible incident and the continued attacks on the freedom of religion of the minority community and their places of religious worship; calling upon Pakistan to ensure the safety, security and well-being of its minority communities”.He then cited a list of incidents against the minority communities in Pakistan in the last year, specifically naming attacks against Mata Rani Bhatiyani Mandir in Sindh, Nankana Sahib Gurudwara and a Hindu temple in Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.“These incidents are occurring at an alarming rate while the state and security institutions in Pakistan have stood by idly and completely failed in preventing these attacks on the minority communities and their places of worship,” said Bagchi.Honorable Chief Justice has taken notice of attack on Hindu Temple in RYK Punjab during our meeting today. The matter is fixed before the Court on Friday. pic.twitter.com/QpnGXpZzO2— Dr. Ramesh Vankwani (@RVankwani) August 5, 2021 As per media reports, a case had been registered against the unnamed boy under the Pakistan Penal Code on July 25, based on a complaint by a seminary official. The Dawn newspaper reported, citing sources, that local Hindu community elders had tendered an apology to the seminary administration. They had noted that the boy was a minor and mentally challenged. After a lower court granted bail to the nine-year-old boy, the residents were incited to protest and close down shops against the verdict. Along with damaging the temple, the protesters also blocked the motorway for three hours. The media reports also noted that the police were deployed late in the evening to respond to the situation, as senior police officials were attending police martyrs’ day ceremonies.Meanwhile, the Pakistan Hindu council’s patron-in-chief Ramesh Vankwani, who stated that the situation had been tense following the incident, on Thursday met with the Pakistani Supreme Court Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed. The Supreme Court issued a press release after the meeting, saying that the Chief Justice had expressed “grave concern over the tragic incident”.“Taking cognizance of the issue, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan has fixed the matter before Court on 06.08.2021 (Friday) at Islamabad with the directions to Chief Secretary Punjab and IGP Punjab to appear along with report on 06.08.2021 and has also summoned Dr Ramesh Kumar, MNA and Patron in Chief Pakistan Hindu Council,” said the press note.Earlier this year, Pakistan’s apex court had ordered the reconstruction of the Hindu temple in Karak after it was badly damaged by a mob.
