New Delhi: Nepal foreign minister Shishir Khanal on Thursday (August 27) said more than 300 Indians were missing since flash floods hit the Himalayan nation near the Nepal-Tiber border on Wednesday (August 26). They are among the roughly 1,400 reported missing from different countries in Nepal’s sudden severe floods and landslides in Tibet. A series of flash floods along the Trishuli River struck Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts on Wednesday morning. The floods also affected the Gyirong Port area on the Nepal-Tibet border. At least 390 have been confirmed dead in Nepal, AP reports, while more than 1,400 are missing, it said, citing authorities in India and Nepal. Flood warnings have been issued in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan districts of Nepal. The official said the Indian government was one of the countries that had requested permission to deploy its National Disaster Response Force to Nepal. The government declined the request.“We received similar requests from China and other countries too, but we had to turn down the request,” the foreign ministry official said.The decision was taken on the recommendation of the Nepali Army and police and based on experiences during the 2015 earthquake, when foreign teams caused significant coordination and management issues, the official told the publication.Indian nationals in NepalOf the 300 cited by Khanal, about 290 Indian nationals remain uncontactable as of 8:30 pm, while 84 Indian nationals were rescued earlier today, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press briefing on Thursday (August 27). The remaining include 63 Indian nationals working on Trishuli 1 power project. The Indian embassy in Kathmandu is in touch with the project head to get additional details about them, he said. Twenty-one workers rescued are from Tamil Nadu. The remaining missing individuals include tourists from different parts of India who had travelled to Nepal for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via different travel agencies. Of these, 95 are in Darchen and are currently proceeding towards Hilsa to cross into Nepal. Four are in Jilong city, while 13 are in Zutulpuk and are en route to the town of Saga along with another 60-70 Indians also heading towards Saga, he added.The AP report citied the earlier figure of 288 Indians reported missing, later updated to 290.The Indian government is working on establishing contact with persons of Indian origin, including a large group from the Isha foundation, who have been reported missing, Jaiswal said.47.5 tonnes of relief materials sent to NepalIndia has so far sent two rounds of humanitarian aid to Kathmandu. “A C-130J aircraft took off yesterday at around 8.30 pm carrying 10 tonnes of relief material including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, medicines, etc. And then this morning, a C-17 aircraft departed with 37.5 tonnes of supplies comprising 28.5 tonnes of relief items, 8 tonnes of medicine and 1 tonne of food items,” the MEA said.Further assistance is being considered while bailey bridges are being mobilised to assist in rescue and relief efforts, Jaiswal said.The MEA has also set up a 24×7 control room, with updated contact numbers available on the MEA’s X handle.Flood alert in Indian statesAuthorities in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Indian states that fall downstream of Nepal, have been asked to remain on high alert as discharge from Nepal continues flowing downwards. Photo: PTINine north Bihar districts have sounded an alert, with water levels expected to rise in the Gandak and Kosi rivers, the New Indian Express reported. High alerts have been issued for West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani, Supaul and Khagaria, the report said. In Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath directed Maharajganj and Kushinagar administrations to take precautions, the paper reported. The districts are likely to see rising water levels in the Gandak and Narayani rivers, it said.
