Guwahati: The toll in the landslide at a railway construction site in Manipur’s Noney district rose to 24 on Saturday, July 2, with 38 people still missing, officials said.More teams were deployed at the site in Tupul to augment the search and rescue operations, they said.Army, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, SDRF and NDRF are continuing the search operations at the site, a defence spokesperson in Guwahati said.“Through Wall Radar is being successfully used, and a search and rescue dog is being employed to assist,” he said.So far, 13 Territorial Army personnel and five civilians have been safely rescued. Bodies of 18 Territorial Army personnel and six civilians were recovered, he said.“Search for 12 missing Territorial Army personnel and 26 civilians continued,” he added.The bodies of 14 personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were sent to their hometowns by two Indian Airforce aircraft and an Army helicopter, the spokesperson said.The body of one personnel was sent to Kangpokpi district in Manipur by road.Full military honours were given to the deceased personnel at Imphal before sending the bodies to their destinations, the spokesperson said.Chief minister N. Biren Singh had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for those injured.Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday evening said nine jawans from her state lost their lives in the incident.“Shocked to know that nine jawans of the Darjeeling hills (107 Territorial Army unit) are among the casualties in the Manipur landslide. Deeply mourn the demise and extend all solidarity and support to the next of kin. Heartfelt condolences,” Banerjee tweeted.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said at least one person from the neighbouring state died in the massive landslide, and 16 others were missing.Saddened to learn that one person from Morigaon, Assam lost his life, 5 are undergoing treatment & 16 still missing in the Manipur landslide, Sarma wrote on Twitter.“Cabinet colleague Shri @Pijush_hazarika will reach Manipur as early as possible to coordinate rescue ops,” he said.(With PTI inputs)
