New Delhi: Prices of petrol and diesel were raised by 87-91 paise per litre today, the third hike in the last nine days.PTI reports that the latest revision pushed petrol prices higher by 87 paise per litre and diesel by up to 91 paise across the country.As global market reels under elevated crude oil prices thanks to the crisis triggered by the US-Israel war on Iran, India’s weaker rupee has had a role to play in raising the cost of its fuel imports. India has not been able to secure a blanket approval from Iran for its ships.Overall, the volume of India’s imports of crude oil fell 4.3% in April, against about 50% over the comparable period last year, reports say.India, the world’s third-largest importer and consumer of oil, was one of the last major economies to raise retail fuel prices. However, Indian oil prices were already among the highest globally. The latest increases come amidst hikes effected by private retailers ahead of the first fuel price revision on May 15.PTI reports that Nayara Energy had raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs 5 and Rs 3 per litre, respectively, in March, while Shell increased petrol prices by Rs 7.41 a litre and diesel by as much as Rs 25 per litre from April 1.Jio-BP, the fuel retailing joint venture of Reliance Industries Ltd and BP Plc, has, however, moved rates at its pumps in tandem with PSUs.
