New Delhi: Within a month of the youth movement triggered by the NEET undergraduate exam paper leak, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has had to announce that the UGC-NET exams for three subjects will need to be conducted again because multiple errors were found in the papers.The University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a key test that determines the eligibility for assistant professor posts and junior research fellowships.The exams for English and Commerce will be re-conducted September 9, while Sociology will be held on September 10. The NTA has announced that results for the 84 other subjects in which the UGC-NET was held will be declared as scheduled and that the alocation of seats will not be reduced.The answer keys to the exams were only released on August 16 – with the delay inviting significant criticism.The NTA said that it had formed a committee to enquire into and look into complaints of errors.“The Committee found that the three papers had many factual, typographical, translation errors including misspelt names of prominent scholars, garbled book titles, errors in the stem wording of questions, grammatical errors, gender and number agreement errors, punctuation mistakes, and non-standard coined terms for established concepts, as well as repetition of a significant number of questions previously administered. The Committee recommended that, in the interest of holding a fair and error-free examination, these three papers should be re-conducted,” the agency said.The NTA has been under scrutiny much before a movement in New Delhi, which spread nationwide, led to the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.In the aftermath of the protests the NTA fired 47 officials as part of a “major overhaul.” In late July, Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar told the Rajya Sabha that 15 out of 39 sanctioned posts in the agency remain vacant.However, a deep dive into the NTA’s functioning under its current chief P.K. Joshi – who has close links with the Bharatiya Janata Party brass – show that there is little by way of accountability from its leadership despite costly mistakes and leaks.
