New Delhi: The Jadavpur University vice-chancellor has dissolved the committee tasked with approving and monitoring public programmes held on its premises after it greenlit a convention attended by youth leader Neha Bora on October 5.The dissolution, reported by The Telegraph, came after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student and teacher wings opposed the event, which had brought together several Left student and youth organisations. As The Wire had reported, the event organised by the Left student group AISA had generated significant interest, especially as Bora has emerged a symbol of significant youth-led movements in the national capital, first against former education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and now against the head of the poll body, Gyanesh Kumar.Ahead of the event, the RSS-affiliated ABVP had expressed concern over the entry of ‘outside’ political figures into the campus.Jadavpur MLA Sarbori Mukherjee, notably, has been hosted for BJP-backed events multiple times at the university halls. Mukherjee, reports note, had been the one who called for a “night-long tandav (rampage)” following which ABVP supporters forcibly entered, injured students and vandalised the JU campus on August 20.This was noted by multiple JU speakers in the convention on October 5 as well. Before the event, the university’s officiating registrar, Debjit Dutta, had said that his office had not received “any file or communication” seeking permission for the programme, according to PTI.The Jadavpur University unit president of AISA, Soumili, told The Wire that the group had submitted a letter as early as September 21, and that it was approved by September 25.“In our letter we had mentioned the topic and other details of the programme – we mentioned that the convention aims to bring together students from across the state, however, by that time we had not exactly chosen the speakers and nor were we asked by the concerned authority to do the same,” she said. The event on Monday covered the special intensive revision, the National Education Policy, the Indian Statistical Institute Bill, 2026, the education system at large and the role of the Left in combatting repression.“All the speakers of our programme were students of different institutes like ISI and SRFTI and these institutes were attacked by BJP goons in recent times,” Soumili added.A day ago, the University vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said in a signed order, according to the Telegraph report, that the “Approving and Programme Monitoring Committee” had been dissolved.“Henceforth the issue will be looked after by the acting registrar Debajit Datta,” the order said.Datta’s appointment itself had come after the RSS-linked teachers’ organisation Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh opposed the extension given to his predecessor Selim Box Mandal. The Telegraph report quotes Bhaskar Sardar, president of the ABRSM, as having said that “the committee approved the programme without consulting the registrar”.Sardar told the paper that the committee chairman and dean of students had been issued show-cause notices over the “procedural lapse”.
