New Delhi: Latest in the string of embarrassing incidents concerning the state of examinations in India is the collapse of an old concrete slab outside an examination centre in Uttar Pradesh, which caused around 25 students and their family members to fall into a drain on Sunday (May 31).The incident took place near Kanpur’s H.N. Mishra PG College where candidates had gathered for the Uttar Pradesh B.Ed Joint Entrance Examination. After candidates were allegedly informed at the last-minute that they need to present photocopies of their Aadhaar card, several students and their family members flocked to a nearby shop to arrange the documents.According to reports, several people were standing on the old concrete slab that was covering the drain outside the photocopy shop when it collapsed. Four candidates were injured while several others had their belongings damaged due to the incident. One injured guardian was taken to the hospital for treatment, India Today reported.Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal told news agency PTI that the candidates had gone to a shop in the Nagar Nigam market area to get photocopies of necessary documents. “The old drain slab collapsed due to overcrowding. A few people suffered minor injuries, but there was no loss of life,” Lal told PTI.According to the report, the candidates received assistance and made it to their respective examination centres despite the disruption. However, the incident sparked outrage on the condition of the public infrastructure that led to this situation.UP police said that the examination was conducted as per schedule. It was not immediately known if the incident prevented any student from taking the exam. The incident comes amid a slew of other controversies surrounding major examinations in the country. On May 12, the national-level medical entrance test, NEET, was cancelled less than 10 days after being conducted due to an alleged paper leak. Shortly after this, the Central Board of Secondary Education hit headlines when students complained of irregularities in marking, mismatched answer sheets and other issues with the newly introduced online marking system (OSM). A day before the Kanpur incident, the CUET UG exam was delayed by an hour due to technical glitches, which led to many students leaving the exam centres without appearing for the test.
