New Delhi: The last day of campaigning for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) polls saw Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members allegedly vandalising property at the Zakir Hussain (Evening) College and assaulting students and staff. The incident took place on Monday when ABVP’s vice-presidential candidate, Shakti Singh, had gone to the college to campaign. College principal Masroor Ahmad Baig has blamed the ABVP for the vandalism. The Indian Express quoted Baig as saying, “I don’t know how it started, But I was shocked to hear the commotion. They vandalised college properties and threw flower pots. It was ABVP activists who beat up students; they even hit girls and staff.” Baig said the college would file a complaint regarding the violence.DCP (central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said that police personnel was present at the spot when the incident took place and they controlled the crowd. He said no complaint has been received from the college administration yet.A student who did not want to be identified told The Indian Express that the commotion started when Singh tried to enter the college campus with a large group of supporters and was stopped. “He was told that he could take a few supporters for campaigning. They got angry and started breaking college property, and passed lewd comments,” the student said.A video grab of the alleged vandalism by ABVP members. But the ones indulging in violence are not ABVP activists. Singh had gone to campaign in the college…what we know is that fight broke out between two student groups.”Several student outfits from the university and beyond have condemned the alleged violence by ABVP members, with some demanding police action against the miscreants.A group of students submitted a memorandum to the DUSU chief election officer (CEO) and demanded immediate arrest of the assaulters.Kawalpreet Kaur, a member of the All India Students’ Association and last year’s presidential candidate, addressing the CEO, said, “This attack has been the most horrific assault on a college in recent history when over a hundred hooligans led by Shakti Singh and armed with sticks assaulted common students and took over the…college.“DU has failed to stand in solidarity with the assaulted students who have been left alone in protesting such a gruesome act.” Kaur also demanded the cancellation of Singh’s nomination. The DUSU election is scheduled for Wednesday.
