New Delhi: Wholesale inflation in India has seen a sharp increase in June, rising to 9.87%, primarily driven by increase in food prices. As per data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday (July 14), the inflation in June increased to 9.87% from 9.68% in May. The latest figure is the highest level in the current series going back to April 2024, reported Indian Express.This is the second print under the revised Wholesale Price Index (WPI) series, which has 2022-23 as the base year and incorporates new calculation methods, and a greater number of items, among other changes.Earlier, the statistics ministry data had revealed that household inflation shot up to 4.38% in June, a figure that is the highest in one-and-a-half years. This increase in household inflation was owing to continued rise in food prices in wake of less rains along with increased retail fuel prices.As per the data released on Tuesday, wholesale food inflation increased to 6.14% in June from 4.49% in May. The increase was particularly driven by massive month-on-month prices increases for the likes of drumstick (46%), capsicum (38%), tomato (33%), and onion (26%), reported Indian Express.The commerce ministry also released the Producer Price Index (PPI) data on Tuesday, according to which, output PPI inflation increase to 9.57% in June from 9.38% in May.Last month, the Union government had released India’s first Producer Price Index (PPI) under a new series. That is, the government updated the base year and basket of goods and their relative weights so that the inflation index better reflects the current situation in the economy.
