New Delhi: Ending his self-imposed rule of avoiding individual diplomatic engagements, Nepal prime minister Balendra Shah on Monday (August 10) held his first one-on-one meeting with Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava at the prime minister’s office, reported The Kathmandu post.Till now, ever since he became the Nepal prime minister in March this year, Shah had avoided individual meetings with Kathmandu-based ambassadors and instead chose to hold joint meetings with foreign ambassadors on April 9 and May 26.Shah’s meeting with ambassador Srivastava on Monday covered Nepal-India bilateral relations, mutual interests, development partnership and areas of cooperation between the two countries, said the prime minister’s secretariat. While Srivastava congratulated Shah and asserted India’s commitment to further strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries, Shah emphasised the need to deepen Nepal’s “historic relationship” with India and work together in areas of shared interest, said the secretariat.Later on Monday, Shah is also scheduled to meet Chinese ambassador Zhang Maoming. On Tuesday (August 11), US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Scott Urbom is expected to meet Shah, reported The Kathmandu Post. The Kathmandu Post report added that the decision to meet the ambassadors of India and China on the same day seems to be intended to highlight the equal importance of its two immediate neighbours to Nepal.
