New Delhi: Over ten days after the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday (October 5) said that New Delhi had “raised concerns” about the US ambassador to Pakistan’s tour of Gilgit Baltistan and also objected to the parallel drawn by American envoy to India, Eric Garcetti, to the US delegation’s visit to Srinagar for a G20 event.Last month, US ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome had visited Gilgit and Hunza valleys, and the official stated purpose was to “explore opportunities for strengthening the region’s climate resilience”.When asked about his colleague’s trip to Gilgit-Baltistan, Garcetti said it was not his place to react to Blome’s visit, but added, “…he’s been before and we obviously had part of our delegation in Jammu and Kashmir during the G20 as well”.“Our position on the status of the entire union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, that is an integral part of India, is well known. We would urge the international community to respect our sovereignty and territorial integrity. We have raised concerns about that visit by the US ambassador to Pakistan with the US side,” said MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in answer to a question during the weekly briefing. On Ambassador Garcetti’s comment, Bagchi added, “we do not think that the two situations are equivalent”.Blome’s trip to the area last year had also resulted in India lodging a formal complaint with the United States. At that time, the US envoy had referred to the region as ‘Azad Jammu and Kashmir.’ India asserts sovereignty over the entire Kashmir region, encompassing territories administered by Pakistan on the other side of the Line of Control (LoC).
