New Delhi: In what could signal more signs of a thaw in ties, the foreign ministers of India and Canada have spoken to each other over phone. While prime minister Narendra Modi had earlier congratulated new Canadian prime minister Mark Carney on X, a phone call between top government functionaries is a further warming.External affairs minister Jaishankar wrote on X that he “appreciated” the call with Anita Anand, and “discussed the prospects of India-Canada ties” with her.“Wished her a very successful tenure,” he added.Anand thanked Jaishankar on X “for the productive discussion today on strengthening Canada-India ties, deepening [their] economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities.”“I look forward to continuing our work together,” she wrote.Canada is the host of the G7 summit which is likely to take place next month. India, which has been attending the last six G7 summits as a guest for the outreach sessions on the invitation of the host countries, is known to be keen to want an invitation this time as well. While Australia and Ukraine are understood to be on the guest list this time, it is not clear if India has been invited yet.Tensions had risen to unprecedented highs between Canada and India over allegations of the latter’s interference in the former. The Justin Trudeau-led Canadian government, in September 2023, had accused Indian government officials of killing a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.India had dismissed the charges but claimed that Canada had been giving space to anti-Indian groups. Then, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police linked Indian government officials to a campaign targeting Canadian citizens. Six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, were expelled. India took reciprocal action, deepening the diplomatic standoff. The Wire has reported on how Modi’s post on X after Carney’s election in April – he said he looked forward to working with Carney to strengthen ties – was seen as India’s first overture towards a reset after a period of 19 months.“India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,” Modi had posted on X shortly after Carney made his acceptance speech.Shortly before the election, a senior Canadian intelligence official had said that India, along with China, had the potential to interfere in the polls.
