New Delhi: India is being represented by minister of state for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh at the leaders’ summit in Egypt to finalise the end of the Gaza war, which will be chaired by US president Donald trump and Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.Singh posted on X late on Sunday (October 12) night that he had arrived in the Egyptian capital to attend the summit as special representative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.As per diplomatic sources, the invitation for the leaders’ summit was extended separately by both Egypt and White House.Besides trump, the summit is being attended by a host of regional leaders, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron, British prime minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Pakistani prime minister Shahbaz Sharif.Hamas said it would not take part as it had “acted principally through… Qatari and Egyptian mediators” during talks, Hamas political bureau member Hossam Badran told AFP news agency. Israel has also not been invited for the meeting.President Sisi’s office said the summit would aim “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security.” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that a “document ending the war in the Gaza Strip” was expected to be signed.The summit is expected to focus on resolving “key issues [that] remain unresolved” after the ceasefire. This includes detailed discussions about reconstruction in Gaza, ensuring sustained humanitarian access, and providing regional security guarantees.AFP reported that leaders may outline mechanisms to monitor compliance, coordinate international assistance, and deliberate on governance structures for Gaza once hostilities cease. The formal declaration would include commitments from participating states to support rebuilding efforts.Meanwhile, a ceasefire has held for three days as preparations continue for the first phase of the hostage exchange.The release of hostages will begin on Monday (October 13) morning, before the summit begins, as per Hamas. The Palestinian group has agreed to release 20 living Israeli hostages on Monday, along with the remains of 28 others. In return, Israel is set to free around 2000 Palestinian prisoners, including minors and those serving long sentences.Humanitarian aid deliveries have resumed through the Rafah crossing, with hundreds of trucks carrying food and medical supplies entering Gaza each day under Egyptian coordination.
