New Delhi: Within the last week, Punjabi singer-superstar Diljit Dosanjh’s manager has allegedly been targeted by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a group of retired professionals in Punjab has publicly urged him to enter politics, and a news report has revealed he is no longer an Indian citizen since 2022.On May 12, 2026, unidentified assailants fired shots outside the home of Gurpartap Singh Kang, Dosanjh’s manager, in Gonder village, Karnal district, Haryana. Two empty cartridges were recovered at the scene, but Haryana Police reported no formal complaint from Kang or his family and stated the matter is under investigation. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility via a social media post attributed to Tyson Bishnoi, Aarzoo Bishnoi, and Hari Boxer, calling it the “third warning” to Dosanjh and his managers, Sonali Kang and Gurpartap Singh Kang. The post alleged use of Austria-made weapons and cited complaints of misconduct by a Dosanjh employee involving women during an Australia tour, denying any extortion motive. The group alleged that an associate of Dosanjh’s band had harassed women during a recent tour in Australia, and the attack was intended to pressure Dosanjh into distancing himself from the accused employee. The message warned of further consequences if their demands were ignored. The security scare followed a highly publicised effort to draft Dosanjh into Punjab politics. On May 9, 2026, the Jago Punjab Manch, a think-tank comprising retired IAS officers, defence personnel, and civil society activists, issued a full-page advertisement in leading newspapers. The appeal urged Dosanjh to take a leadership role in the state, citing a “crisis of leadership” and the state’s economic struggles.Dosanjh promptly rejected the proposal on social media. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:“Kadey v Nhi.. Mera Kam Entertainment Karna. (Never.. My job is to entertain.) Am Very Happy in My Field. Thank You So Much.”The full-page advertisements came after cinestar Vijay led his party, the TVK, to a surprise win in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Assembly elections are due in Punjab early next year and Dosanjh, one of the most popular figures from the state, could be backed to do an encore in the Sikh-majority state.Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) linked the firing to politics on May 12-13, 2026. Mann accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of pressuring Dosanjh to join politics and resorting to “intimidation tactics” after refusal. He called the manager’s house attack part of this “politics of threat,” noting Dosanjh’s clear rejection. The state BJP has dismissed the AAP claims as baseless. Anil Sarin, General Secretary, Punjab BJP, said it was “totally irresponsible” for the Punjab Chief Minister to make such claims. Referring to an incident during Diljit Dosanjh’s Aura tour stop in Calgary, Sarin said “Everybody knows Diljit Dosanjh is a patriotic person. The entire Punjabi community is proud of him and salutes him. It is only people with separatist ideology who cannot tolerate that.”When Dosanjh noticed a group of protesters displaying pro-Khalistan flags during the concert in Calgary, he had briefly paused his performance and asserted that his shows were meant for music, unity and audiences of all age groups, and not for disruption. He had also asked the security team to remove those creating disturbances. In an interview with Hindustan Times on May 14, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria described the state’s law and order situation as “not satisfactory,” citing a rise in organised crime and targeted violence. He called for greater accountability and seamless coordination between state and central agencies to curb the influence of criminal gangs operating within the region.Adding another dimension to the story, a report by the Indian Express on the same day stated Dosanjh acquired US citizenship in 2022 and travels on a US passport, no longer holding Indian citizenship. He has used an e-visa for India since September 2022, making him ineligible for Indian politics without regaining citizenship.Dosanjh, who is currently in North America for his Aura World Tour, has not publicly commented on the firing in Haryana or his citizenship status.
