New Delhi: The Kerala government has assured the family of the migrant worker from Chhattisgarh, who was lynched in Palakkad last week, of at least Rs 10 lakh in compensation. Thirty-one-year old Ramnarayan Baghel, a resident of Sakti district of Chhattisgarh, was killed on December 16 by a mob that suspected him of being a Bangladeshi national.In a video of the assault that surfaced on social media, one of the attackers can be heard asking Baghel if he was a Bangladeshi.Minister for local self governments of Kerala, M.B. Rajesh said that Bhagel was a “victim of Sangh Parivar’s hate politics”. Rajesh said that among Bhagel’s attackers were RSS workers who have faced criminal cases in the past. “He was attacked after being stigmatised as Bangladeshi. The assailants included RSS workers, who had faced criminal cases. The migrant worker who came in search of a job was tried and assaulted, accused of being a Bengladeshi. He is a victim of the racial hatred being spread by Sangh parivar in the country,” the minister claimed.Bhagel had reached Palakkad in search of livelihood four days before he was killed. He was staying with his relatives near Attappallam under Wayalayar police limits. On December 16, he reportedly lost his way in the village, with the locals suspecting him of theft.The postmortem report found that he died from loss of blood due to internal injuries. Bhagel’s family had initially refused to accept the body.Kerala revenue minister assured Bhagel’s family that would be paid “not less than an amount of Rs 10 lakh” in compensation and that a decision will be made at the next cabinet meeting. The Kerala government will also send Bhagel’s body back to Chhattisgarh by air.A special investigation team has been constituted to investigate the case. Five arrests have been made so far and investigations are on to find out if more people were involved, Palakkad Superintendent of Police Ajith Kumar said.“The district crime branch Deputy SP will head a 10-member team. Relevant sections of the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act will be included in the offences against the accused once the victim’s caste details are verified,” he added.
