New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Police has booked between 1,700 and 2,000 people for offering namaz on a road outside an Eidgah in Kanpur, allegedly without permission, on the occasion of Eid last week.While the news agency PTI has reported that 2,000 people were booked, Times of India has it at 1,700.The charges have been brought against three first information reports filed by police of three stations, separately, at Bajaria, Babu Purwa, and Jajmau police stations on Wednesday, April 26.No arrests have been made yetPolice told the news agency that it is proceeding on the basis of a video which the cops shot of the praying men.The men have been booked under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharging duties), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 283 (danger in public way), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), and 353 (criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), of the Indian Penal Code, PTI reported.Mohammad Suleman, a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, told reporters that the men were being targeted on the basis of religion and disputed the police claim that so many people had prayed outside the Eidgah. He said that only some had prayed outside because there was no space in the premises.FIRs have been registered against 200 worshippers in Jajmau, reported TOI. PTI’s number for that police station is “about 300.”In Babupurwa police station, PTI says, “over 50 people were charged.” TOI reports the number as “40 to 50.”At the Bajaria police station, 1,000-1,500 unknown persons, including some members of the Eidgah management committee, were booked. Here, the complaint had been lodged by Senior Sub Inspector (SSI) Omveer Singh.
