Policeman Watches as Muslim Man Beaten for Dating Hindu Woman in Meerut

The incident occurred the same day the woman was assaulted by Uttar Pradesh police personnel.

New Delhi: Two days after a video of Uttar Pradesh police personnel assaulting a Hindu woman for dating a Muslim man surfaced, another one has appeared – one of the Muslim man being beaten by men belonging to right-wing groups while a cop watches.

Calling the incident “an act of gross imprudence by a few errant cops,” Om Prakash Singh, the Uttar Pradesh police chief said in a tweet that “Irresponsible and insensitive behaviour by UP cops would not be tolerated,” and that corrective action was being taken.

According to an NDTV report, the newly-surfaced 50-second video shows the Muslim man standing outside his home, surrounded by men from right-wing groups, with a police official standing next to him. The man’s face looks injured, and he can be heard trying to reason with the men who abused and heckled, accusing him of engaging in ‘love jihad‘.

On Tuesday, police personnel in Meerut assaulted a medical student for being in a relationship with a Muslim man. In the previously-released video of the incident, a male police officer can be heard reprimanding the woman, “Mullah zyada pasand aa raha hai. Woh hi dikh rahe hain Hindu ke hote hue. Mullah ka le rahi ho. Sharam nahi aa rahi? (You are very fond of Muslims. You are seeing them even though there are Hindus. You are having sex with a mullah. Are you not ashamed?)”. As the woman begins to reply, the female constable sitting next to her in the back of a police vehicle starts thrashing her.

The incident took place after the woman and a fellow male medical student – who is the Muslim man the police referred to – were attacked by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad who were accusing the couple of falling into the trap of ‘love jihad’ – a term used by right-wing groups to describe a consensual relationship between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman. They reportedly later handed them over to the police. The woman was thrashed when when the police was taking her to the police station. She was detained for a few hours with no charges and released.

Four police personnel involved in the incident have now been suspended by the UP police.

“A girl and a boy were brought to the police station on the directions of an organisation. Their parents were called and they were handed over. Now, the video that we are seeing shows some police personnel doing Now, a video has surfaced in which an officer sitting in front is using objectionable language, while a female officer sitting at the back with the girl is hitting the girl. A probe has been ordered and the police personnel involved have been suspended,” said Ranvijay Singh, Superintendent of police (city).
