New Delhi: Prohibitory orders are in place in Telangana’s Gajwel town after a man allegedly desecrated Chhatrapati Shivaji’s statue. Hindu and Muslim groups clashed following the incident, which also saw stone-pelting. Local Hindu right-wing outfits called for a bandh in Gajwel on Tuesday in protest.According to Siasat Daily, police registered seven cases and took around 10 persons into custody in connection with the violence.Gajwel, a town in Telangana’s Siddipet district, forms part of chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s constituency, which also goes by the same name, Gajwel.According to one of the FIRs (first information reports), one Mohammed Imran had intentionally insulted Hindu icons with the intent to provoke communal sentiments. He was charged with Sections 294 (performing obscene acts and songs), 294 (b) (singing, reciting or uttering obscene song, ballad or words in a public place), 295 (a) (deliberate intent to outrage religious feelings), and 504 (insulting someone to provoke) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to News Minute.Local reports say Imran, in an inebriated condition, urinated at the base of the statue on Monday, July 3 evening. Videos emerging on social media show a group of men surrounding Imran after the desecration and he was made to clean the statue and was paraded naked around the town, according to IANS.Following the incident, 40-year-old Mallu Goud, employed as an electrician in Gajwel, lodged a petition claiming that on his way back home from the police station after Imran’s arrest, at around 8:30 pm, people related to Imran intercepted and abused him and also allegedly beat him up. Police officials said that the identity of the attackers was yet to be ascertained. A separate FIR has been filed based on Goud’s complaint.A case has been registered under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 294 (b) (singing, reciting or uttering any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 295 (A) (deliberate intent to outrage religious feelings), 143 (unlawful assembly) read with section 149 (offence committed by member who is part of an unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).At around 12:30 in the night, the Gajwel Police received another complaint in connection with the same incident. One Kashamaina Sandeep approached the police saying that he was attacked by a mob at Ambedkar Chowrastha at 10 pm and that he underwent treatment at the government hospital for injuries. The complainant said that some unidentified Muslim villagers from Sangapur restrained Sandeep, attacked and beat him with a bottle on his head.Siddipet Commissioner of Police N. Shwetha said that no one was injured in the stone-pelting and arrests were being made over the incident. On Tuesday, videos emerged on social media showing a large crowd outside a mosque in Gajwel. In response to this video, the Commissioner said that the people were only passing by the mosque.“Prohibitory orders are in place and I have personally spoken to both communities. It is under control, and it was a normal bandh call due to which people who gathered were walking towards the town (centre),” Shwetha said.Following the communally charged atmosphere in the town, the police beefed up security. Additional forces from the neighbouring districts were rushed to the spot to prevent the trouble from escalating. Senior officials are monitoring the situation, Siasat Daily reported.Telangana goes to polls in December this year.
