New Delhi: A fresh round of stone-pelting was reported from violence-hit Delhi’s Jahangirpuri on Monday afternoon, just days after communal clashes left several people injured.Jahangirpuri in the national capital saw violent clashes, injuring several, on Saturday, April 16, during a Shobha Yatra on Hanuman Jayanti. According to Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, 23 people from both communities have been arrested.On Monday afternoon, stones and bricks were reportedly thrown from a roof, close to the site of Saturday’s clash, prompting police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) to cordon off the area. One person has been detained in connection with the latest incident, DCP (northwest) Usha Rangrani has been quoted as saying by the IE report.“A video was being circulated on Sunday on social media showing a man (in blue kurta) opening fire during the riot in the Jahangirpuri area on April 16. A Police team from the northwest district had gone to his house in CD Park Road to look for him and to question his family members. The family members pelted two stones on them in retaliation. Legal action is being taken. One person has been detained and the situation is completely under control now,” Rangrani added.After the incident, the road has been blocked, with RAF and CRP in rio–t gear stationed in and around Kushal Chowk. The stones were reportedly thrown near the entry of the narrow lane in which the family’s home is located.As soon as the incident came to light, security forces descended on the scene in riot gear to seal the entry into the lane and pushed all media personnel outwards Kushal Chowk and sealed the main road with barricades.Twenty-three people, including two minors, have so far been arrested in connection with the Jahangirpuri clashes.During a press briefing on Monday, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana asserted that those involved in the violent clashes will not be spared irrespective of class, creed or religion. He refuted claims that attempts were made to hoist saffron flags at a mosque during the Hanuman Jayanti procession.“No, there was no attempt to hoist any saffron flag at the mosque during the procession,” Asthana said when asked if the clashes broke out after attempts were made by some to hoist the flag.“We have registered a case and 23 people from both communities have been held so far. Eight among them have previous criminal records,” he said.The police official said those trying to disrupt the atmosphere through social media would not be spared.“We are analysing the social media and if required those spreading false news, misinformation or tweeting any rumour with an intention to disturb the environment will not be spared and legal action will be taken against them,” he added.(With PTI inputs)
