New Delhi: Bihar police on Monday detained the man who had announced a Rs 2 lakh award for killing Uttarakhand-based gym owner Deepak Kumar after he grabbed headlines for defending an elderly Muslim shopkeeper from Bajrang Dal goons last month. The police action came in response to an FIR filed by Kumar with the Uttarakhand police on Sunday (February 8).The man, identified as one Utkarsh Singh from Bihar’s Motihari district, had posted a video on social media threatening Kumar for defending 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper, Vakeel Ahmed, from rightwing goons.Kumar has been facing intimidation and threats from Hindutva supporters since a video showing him defending Ahmed, went viral on social media. The FIR, registered late Sunday night, mentioned section 351 (3) (threat to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Indian Express reported.Kumar said that he came across the threatening video on social media. The video features Singh with a tilak on his forehead, holding bundles of cash in his hand. “Whoever kills Mohammad Deepak and carries out the task of ‘educating’ him about Sanatan Dharma, will be given ₹2 lakh, Singh is heard saying in the video according to Kumar’s complaint. On January 26, Bajrang Dal members harassed Ahmed for dropping the word ‘Baba’ from his shop’s name, Baba School Dress and Matching Centre, in Uttarakhand’s Kotdwar. The Bajrang Dal men took issue with the word ‘Baba’ as they alleged that it was related to a local deity associated with Hanuman.Kumar then defended Ahmed and on being asked his name, said that it was ‘Mohmmad Deepak’. A video of this exchange was widely circulated on social media, bringing unwanted attention on Kumar. On January 31, Bajrang Dal members gathered outside Kumar’s gym in a bid to “teach him a lesson”. Kumar’s gym has since been deserted according to reports.“Half of the town supports me, but people do not applaud when you do good deeds. Honesty might come at a price,” Kumar told the paper.
