New Delhi: Railway Police on August 16 filed a first information report over the July 21 thrashing of a minor Muslim boy at Mumbai’s Bandra railway station, a day after a video showing the attack went viral.The Quint has reported that on July 21, the boy was traced by the family of a minor Hindu girl he was with. The girl’s family had alleged that she had been kidnapped and lodged a complaint with Ambernath police on this. Police filed a kidnapping FIR against unknown persons.On the same day, the family themselves managed to trace the two and attacked the boy at the Bandra Terminus.A vicious attack followed, in which a mob can be seen chanting “Jai Shri Ram”. Slogans against “love jihad” – a bogey peddled by Hindutva groups who claim there is a conspiracy by Muslims to convert Hindu women through marriage – were also heard. The girl is seen asking the men not to hurt the boy, but they are seen to ignore her.The attackers allegedly handed the boy over to the Nirmal Nagar police station in Bandra.Midday has quoted Senior Inspector Jagannath Kalaskar of Ambernath police station as having said that they “located the girl at Bandra Terminus and handed her over to her parents” and “similarly handed over the boy to his parents.”The video went viral on August 15, prompting the Bandra railway police to launch an enquiry and investigation. The resulting FIR invokes sections relevant to rioting, unlawful assembly and voluntarily causing hurt.
