New Delhi: Police have arrested two people for driving a 26-year-old Dalit man to hang himself in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The accused had thrashed the man, Dharampal Diwakar, for plucking leaves from their mango tree, Diwakar’s family has alleged.The incident took place at Aasta village which falls within the Malwan police station limits. Station House Officer Sher Singh Rajput said that according to his family, Diwakar had plucked the leaves while he was out shepherding goats in the village.An Indian Express report quotes Diwakar’s father, Rampati, as having said that he had fed his goats these leaves.Three local men, Noor Mohammad, Ashiq Ali and Salman had allegedly beaten him up over this. While the matter was temporarily resolved with the intervention of others in the neighbourhood, Diwakar’s family has alleged that he was visibly upset once he returned home.No suicide has been found by police yet.An FIR was lodged against three people for abetment to suicide based on the family’s complaint.
