When Sumitra, a Hindu, and Anees, a Muslim, got married in 1966, their families accepted it but things were not easy in other ways. For one thing, they could not get an apartment to rent. That was then – things have not got very much better since. Now, governments have also joined in, and laws are being framed to make such marriages difficult, says journalist Seema Chishti, their daughter, in a podcast discussion with Sidharth Bhatia.Seema Chishti, a journalist, has written a book about her parents called Sumitra and Anees: Tales and Recipes from a Khichdi Marriage. The book also contains recipes prepared by Sumitra, which incorporates the food of both cultures and traditions.Despite all the problems, Chishti is an optimist, because she thinks that love and fellowship eventually make the big difference. Love is meant to be free, and will find its own place, she says.
