New Delhi: In the last 12 financial years, banks have written off loans amounting to nearly Rs 10 lakh crore given to large corporates and services, the Union government told the parliament on Monday (August 10), reported, reported Press Trust of India.In a written reply, Union minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on outstanding loans to large industries and services and said that it has it has increased from Rs 63,19,057 crore in FY25 to Rs 69,21,734 crore in FY26.The data reveals that loan write-offs touched a high of Rs 1,48,753 crore in 2018-19.Chaudhary added that as per RBI – Resolution of Stressed Assets Directions 2025, issued for commercial banks, write-off (a major portion of which is due to technical/prudential/ advances under collection) is an accounting procedure undertaken by a bank to adjust its balance sheets.The Wire had earlier reported that in December last year, Chaudhary had informed on Monday the parliament that public sector banks (PSBs) have written off an aggregate loan amount of Rs 6.15 lakh crore in the last five and a half financial years, till September 30, 2025.“As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, PSBs have written-off an aggregate loan amount of Rs 6,15,647 crore, during the last five financial years and the current financial year till 30.9.2025 (provisional data),” Chaudhary had said last year.
