New Delhi: Karnal town in Haryana on Tuesday, September 7, witnessed heavy deployment of Haryana Police along with armed central forces in wake of farmers’ call to gherao the mini-secretariat. Farmers said the latest demonstration is being taken up in protest against the August 28 lathicharge in Karnal where several farmers had been injured, The Telegraph has reported.A huge posse of policemen was also seen at the new Anaj Mandi in the town where farmers plan to congregate and hold a mahapanchayat before marching towards the mini-secretariat. By 10:30 am on Tuesday, about 250 farmers had reached the venue and more were expected to join in the due course of time.Meanwhile, officials said that vehicular traffic was plying normally on theĀ Delhi-Karnal-Ambala National highway despite several farmers congregating in Karnal.Gurnam Singh Chaduni, Haryana Bharatiya Kisan Union (Chaduni) chief, appealed to the farmers to assemble at the Anaj Mandi in a peaceful manner. “We will be holding a mahapanchayat in new Anaj Mandi.”“I appeal to all to reach the mandi in a peaceful manner. We got the message that police will allow us to gather at the mandi. The next course of action will be decided at the Mahapanchayat,” Chaduni said in a video message.Along with farmers, Rakesh Tikait, BKU leader, is also reaching new Anaj Mandi to participate in Mahapanchayat, reports have indicated.Leaving nothing to chance, there has been heavy barricading and massive police presence at the mini-secretariat in Karnal. Senior police officials are on the ground to take stock of the situation. From Monday 12:30 pm until Tuesday midnight, the Haryana government has suspended mobile internet services and issued prohibitory orders banning the gathering of people. Photo: Twitter/@RamanDhakaAs many as 40 companies of security personnel, including 10 companies of central armed police forces, have been roped in to maintain law and order in Karnal.Issuing an advisory on Monday, Haryana Police said, National Highway No 44 (Ambala-Delhi) may see some traffic disruptions in the district on Tuesday.“Therefore, the general public using NH-44 are advised to avoid journey through Karnal town or otherwise use alternate routes to go to their destination on September 7,” it said, adding that there could be route diversions on the national highway depending on the emerging situation.Five SP-rank officials and 25 DSP-rank officials have been deployed in Karnal to monitor security. Drones carrying cameras will also be used to monitor the situation, Ganga Ram Punia, Karnal SP, said.Addressing media in Chandigarh on Monday, Anil Vij, Haryana home minister, urged farmers to make sure that their protest is peaceful and no commoner is affected.The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmers groups protesting against the farm laws, had threatened to lay siege to the Karnal mini-secretariat on Tuesday if its demands were not fulfilled.On August 28, the Haryana Police had resorted to lathicharge against a group of farmers for allegedly disrupting traffic movement on a national highway in Karnal. Several farmers were injured on that day.
