New Delhi: A farmer from Agra’s Baroli Ahir has sent the money he received under the Centre’s PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme to the chief minster of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, reported Times of India. “I have sent a money order of Rs 2,000 to CM Yogi Adityanath. I am under Rs 35 lakh debt and if the CM cant help me, he can at least grant me permission to kill myself,” Pradeep Sharma, the 39-year old potato farmer, told TOI. The distressed farmer had earlier written to the district administration and the state government seeking their intervention as he suffered crop loss in 2016 and when his father died of cancer in 2017. But he did not receive any response. Also read: The Farm Widow: A Suicide and a Life Left BehindPotato growers have been struggling in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, Hathras and Mathura regions, which produce most of the potatoes in the state. After demonetisation, prices of potatoes crashed to as low as Rs 2 per kilogram. A bumper harvest of the crop in 2017 and 2018 has not helped matters. In the present season too, prices are hovering around Rs 5-6 per kilogram, below the Rs 7-8 per kilogram that it takes to grow the crop. Costs for the farmers go up further if the cost of harvesting, transporting and cold storage is added.
