Listen: Five Recordings in Memory of Balamurali Krishna

The veteran Carnatic music vocalist M. Balamurali Krishna, who enthralled music lovers for more than four decades, passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. He was 86 and had been ailing for some time. He was born in Sankaraguptam in the East Godavari district of what is now Andhra Pradesh in 1930.

A highly respected figure in the field of classical music, Balamurali Krishna was also popular among Tamil film audiences for his hit song ‘Oru Naal Podhuma’ in the 1965 Sivaji Ganesan-starrer Thiruvilayadal, a mythological film. His work as a classical musician won him the Padma Vibhushan, as well as the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. He had a wide repertoire in Tamil and Telugu, and was much loved for his devotional music.
