With a view to fight corruption and curtail the black economy, the government last week announced its decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 100 notes, a move that almost immediately resulted in widespread chaos among millions of working class Indians and anybody who deals with cash on a daily basis.

The government decision has resulted in millions of disgruntled Indians waiting in endless queues across the country to recover their own money from banks, ATMs and post offices. The Wire‘s Shome Basu captures the wait.
