Two women – a research scholar and a professor’s wife – allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras) campus on Wednesday.

Police sources, according to The Hindu, said that P. Maheswari, 34, a post-doctoral research scholar in chemistry from Puducherry, was found hanging in the Sabarmati hostel around 4 p.m.

In a separate incident, G. Vijayalakshmi, 47, wife of Ganesan, who teaches Physics at the institute, was also found hanging in their flat.

Both the bodies were sent to the Royapettah government hospital for post-mortem examination.

According to PTI, the institution said in a statement that the research scholar’s family was informed of the incident and that they were extending full cooperation to the authorities.

“IIT, Madras, reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar’s family has been informed. The institute is taking necessary action and extending full cooperation to civil authorities,” it said in a statement.

“The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss,” it said without divulging any further detail.
