New Delhi: The Gujarat high court granted bail to Hardik Patel, who has been in jail for the past nine months, on Friday. The court also stipulated that Patel would have to stay out of Gujarat for the next six months. Patel headed the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti and led the patidar reservation agitation in the state last year.

In October, Patel was booked under charges of sedition in Surat for allegedly asking his patidar followers to “kill two-five policemen”. His arrest was followed by arson and violence by supporters in parts of Gujarat.

As a consequence of the agitation, in April, the Gujarat government announced a 10% reservation for the poor among the upper castes.
