Vadodara: A 21-year-old nursing student on Saturday filed a rape case against a prominent educational entrepreneur and founder-president of the privately-owned Parul University located at Waghodia near Vadodara, police said.
The complainant also accused the female rector of the girls’ hostel of the nursing institute affiliated to the university, where she is studying, of abetting the crime, police added.
In the FIR, the complainant said she was raped by 66-year-old Jayesh Patel at his residence, located near the girls’ hostel. According to her, the rector Bhavnaben Patel took her there, said Vadodara rural superintendent of police Saurabh Tolambiya.
The nursing student said she was taken to his residence last night, following which he raped her. After the alleged crime, he threatened to expel her from the institute and fail her in her nursing course if she revealed what had happened to anyone, police said.
She said she was also taken to his house on Thursday night, although no crime took place then. The rector was in the know of the crime and even facilitated it, the victim said in her complaint.
A case was lodged at Waghodia police station against Jayesh under sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, while Bhavnaben has been booked under 114 (abetment), police said.
In the past, the rape accused contested state assembly elections twice as the Congress candidate against sitting BJP lawmaker Madhu Srivastava, but lost both the times. He had then joined the BJP.
The BJP suspended him on Sunday. “We got the first hand information through the media (about the rape charge) and have suspended J.K. Patel from the primary membership of the party. Its our moral responsibility to suspend him. He will not be a party member,” BJP district unit president Dilubha Chudasama said.
While the rector was found and arrested on Monday, Jayesh is still absconding. “[Jayesh] Patel’s residence has been found locked. His whereabouts are yet to be known, but we are confident that he will be nabbed soon,” a police officer said.
Parul Univerity in a statement issued on Monday said Jayesh resigned from the post of president of the university. “Patel resigned from the post of president as he was accused of being involved in a rape case. We have accepted his resignation. We have complete faith in the judiciary and hope police would investigate the case without bias and bring out truth,” the statement said. The university has also removed his details from their website.
