Watch: What Is the Likely Outcome of Gujarat Elections 2017?

In a conversation with Karan Thapar, Sanjay Kumar, the director of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies and Prashant Jha, author and associate editor at Hindustan Times, discuss the likely outcome of the Gujarat elections.

    Prashant Jha at 19.37:

“The BJP at the end of each election campaign makes the Hindu voter anxious, makes the Hindu voter bitter, makes the Hindu voter suspicious of Muslims, and makes the Hindu voter suspicious of all other parties as pandering only to Muslims. And it does this through deception, propaganda and lies.”

So this is what an election in India (or is it just Gujarat) finally boils down to? Using falsehoods and lies to arouse and/or play upon insecurities? And mix it up with large dollops of emotional appeal to regional pride? So development, jobs, education…all these get kicked into a dark corner and become non issues?

That doesnt say much about the wisdom and capacity of the Hindu voter!

Can Gujarat ever do an Alabama, a ruby red state for the last 25 years that went blue today as voters rejected Roy Moore (and Trump’s endorsement of him) because of sexual harassment allegations against him, thereby dealing a huge blow to Trump and the Republican party?
