As part of The Wire‘s #PartitionAt70 series which continues until the end of this month, we present a short documentary about Muslims who chose to stay in India. The second video documents the experiences of four freedom fighters from Maharashtra who took part in the Quit India Movement.

Omair Ahmad follows up with Priyanka Pathak-Narain in a second interview about her book Godman to Tycoon: The Untold Story of Baba Ramdev. In a previous conversation with Pathak-Narain, Ahmad had discussed the research that went into the book, while the interview presented below focuses on the injunction, Baba Ramdev’s family, business ventures and partnership with Acharya Balkrishna, primary stakeholder of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited.

1. Indian Muslims Who Chose to Stay in Their Homeland

In this short documentary, we spoke to four Muslims to understand the kind of political and communal atmosphere that had swept across North India in 1947. They talk about the reasons their families decided to stay back and what compelled their relatives and other Muslims, cutting across different socio-economic backgrounds, to migrate to Pakistan.

Each of their four distinct stories helps us understand the kind of questions that Indian Muslims were grappling with at that time and forms a better picture of the changing social and political fabric of India 70 years ago.

2. ‘The Very Idea of India is Under Challenge’

To mark 70 years of independence and 75 years of the Quit India Movement, The Wire spoke to four freedom fighters from Maharashtra. They recall their experiences of the freedom struggle and express anguish at India’s current political scenario.
