New Delhi: The Chandigarh police arrested Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, and his friend Ashish Kumar today on charges of stalking and attempt to kidnap Varnika Kundu, a DJ and the daughter of a senior IAS officer, on the night of August 4.
Barala had earlier been charged with stalking and drunk driving, but a tougher charge of attempted kidnapping was added earlier today when he reached the police station, three hours later than the scheduled time, for questioning, the Hindustan Times reported.
“The moment we learnt about the notice, Vikas headed for Chandigarh. He will cooperate fully with the police,” Subhash Barala had told reporters, even pausing to take a call from his son during the press conference, according to an NDTV report.
Kundu had accused Barala and Kumar of stalking her through the streets of Chandigarh on the night of August 4, after which they were arrested and soon released on bail. “We arrested both Vikas and Ashish and later they were bailed out,” Deputy Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh, Satish Kumar had said on Saturday.
According to PTI, both men were earlier booked under section 354 D (stalking) of IPC and 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act (driving by a drunken person or by a person under the influence of drugs).
