Journalists and media have faced severe repression as part of the post-coup crackdown and growing authoritarianism in Turkey. For many, the Cumhuriyet trial is seen as a test for press freedom in an unsteady democracy.

4. The Man Booker Prize 2017 Longlist

On July 27, judges of the prestigious Man Booker Prize unveiled their longlist. Gathering the best works of fiction in the English-speaking world, this year’s selection is particularly diverse and creative, and includes popular Indian writer Arundhati Roy.

5. Giving Old Theatre Memories a Second Life

Jana Natya Manch, Delhi’s radical street theatre group, gave away decades-old props and costumes on July 12. In 1989, its founder Safdar Hashmi was fatally attacked during a performance. Also known as Janam, the group is passing on its legacy to a new generation.
