New Delhi: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, a veteran BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, will be NDA’s vice presidential candidate, party president Amit Shah said today.

Naidu was chosen at the BJP parliamentary board meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior party leaders.

The 68-year old Naidu currently holds the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting and Housing and Urban Affairs.

The former BJP president is pitted against Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who was chosen by an alliance of 18 opposition parties, including the Congress.

The electoral college for the August 5 election consists of 790 MPs of the two chambers of parliament.

Naidu will file his nomination tomorrow at 11 AM, Shah said.

Tomorrow is the last day for the filing of nominations.

Venkiah Naidu’s only positive experience was being nominated for three terms as a member of the Rajya sabha from Karnataka where he doesnt belong after a stint at the Andhra Assembly and now from Rajasthan. This certainly reveals that Modi trying to sell the idea that he is from the “south”” is a joke. He mainly indulged in politics at Delhi and not being elected by the people refutes that claim. His biggest trait that Modi must have recognised that he is most loyal to him -personally. The other “virtue” ascribed to him is his role as a Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. in which wasnt successful at all. He did not manage his relations with the other parties with any success. He lacked diplomacy and finace.; GST would have never been passed if he had continued in that post. As I&B Minister he certainly managed (how?) to get good support of the media and published well written articles regularly in the print media..(perhaps Ghost written). One hopes that he manages to allow the Rajya Sabha with some success and allows proceedings to run smoothly.
In any case Modi and Jailrey have a very strong ally in the Speaker of the LOk Sabha and have succeeded to avoid debate on the Finance Bill as a money bill and introduced amendments to existing Bills to favour the ruling party.. Perhaps Mod iwll expect Venkiah Naidu to managethe Rajya sabha in a similar fashion
